Everyone has probably heard of Candy Crush the addictive sweet-swapping game from King. If you’re friend with me on Facebook, you’re probably sick of getting game requests (although rather than moan about them you can switch it off here: How to Block Game Requests on Facebook)
I was recently involved in an intense game of Candy Crush when I realised there are some comparisons between the game and how you should run your start-up business.
Lessons about Competitors
Anyone who has ever played Candy Crush will know that the game will “suggest” moves for you if it thinks you’re stuck. I have NEVER completed a game by following the moves suggested by the game.
Likewise in business you will not move forward if you constantly copy your competitors. You have to use your own initiative and your own ideas – not regurgitate that which you have seen someone else do. In my opinion, if you do this your success is not your own.
Whilst you can get ideas from competitors, constantly watching them can be soul-destroying and quite often, what they choose to make public is only their “show-reel” – you don’t see the failures or the hard work it takes beneath the surface.
Strike out on your own – create your own path!
Lessons about Persistence
I actually prefer Candy Crush Soda to the original Candy Crush Saga because when you fail to complete a level, the former asks you to RETRY, the latter asks you to GIVE UP!
Which do you think is most useful in business?
Lessons about Getting Help
Currently, I am on a level in which I have to uncover bears to win. A few times I have come close, missing out by only 1 or 2 and at the end of the level I am prompted to buy extra moves to complete the level. The costs are not astronomical but why would I want to pay out money for something that’s not making me any money in return?
Well, mostly it’s peace of mind. I get so sick and frustrated at being stuck on a level for weeks (sometimes months) that I pay just to get it out the way and move on.
As a business owner, there are many tasks that you hate doing. Tasks that drain your time and energy. If you could pay someone to take them off your hand and get them done quickly and efficiently, wouldn’t you?
That’s exactly what a virtual assistant can do for you and the best thing is that the return on investment is 1000x better than buying bears on Candy Crush.
Just imagine how many more clients you could fit in if you didn’t have to do admin, social media, website updates etc.
Lessons about Procrastination
Following on from the last lesson, just think you many new clients you could fit in if you weren’t playing on Candy Crush!
Until next time … (send me a life)
